FileTaxi is a small Windows application designed for use in conjunction with peer-to-peer
clients like eMule, to minimize
the upload impact by moving downloaded files away from the shared folder. In P2P
clients like eMule the rules are "to
get data you have to share data", so if the shared folder is emptied every time
a new file appears, the only shared files
will be the ones currently in download process.
An extract from the online documentation at
www.emule-project.net (How can I delete/unshare
files):
"To remove a share you must move the files out of your incoming or folders marked
as shared..."
-This is where FileTaxi comes to glory. FileTaxi monitors the share and removes
any files the moment they appear.
Files are being moved to the target directory specified in the FileTaxi options
dialog.
The relocated files can easily be located via the FileTaxi "Open Target" command
(F3).
Though FileTaxi was aimed at the P2P community, the application can be used by anyone
who whishes to
utilize automated file-relocation and backup management.
Specifications:
FileTaxi v1.5 is a free (see
License)
tool designed to move, copy and monitor files (all files in a folder or a specific
file).
Moving or copying is done from A to B.
FileTaxi works on local machines and over networks based on the following conditions:
(permissions are dependent on the current Windows user account)
- If one or more files enters the monitored archive
- If one or more files gets modified inside the monitored archive
- By a timer (FileTaxi uses a 24 hour timer and shows the remaining time in tt:mm:ss)
- When a specific archive reaches a certain size (in MB)
FileTaxi 1.5 includes nested folders when calculating the archive size, but does
not
move or copy nested folders in the selected archive. This is due to the P2P file
sharing nature
where files are delivered as entities (.rar, .iso, .bin, .pdf etc…) and not folders.
Furthermore, this has proven to be useful for users who want some files to remain
in the
archive, while moving the rest.
Other features:
- FileTaxi uses minimal resources and runs minimized in Windows tray
- FileTaxi displays a summary screen with the selected options before proceeding to
active mode
- FileTaxi notifies (optional) the user about current events by dialog and system
sound
- FileTaxi can be set to start together with Windows
- FileTaxi can be toggled to start minimized
- Settings are saved between reboots
- The application includes MSI installer/uninstaller (unless you choose to download
the binaries)
- FileTaxi was first released in 2004 and has been thoroughly
tested ever since through every day use.
